There is a clear profile to being a Kinks fan."

I wonder if part of that is that identifying as a Kinks fan is relatively unusual, at this point, and so it identifies a pretty specific interest. I wonder, for example, if you would be as likely to feel like your tastes overlap with those of another random Elvis Costello fan -- I think there's a broader cross-section of people who would identify as EC fans than Kinks fans and so knowing that one fact about them revels less information.NickShttp://www.beforeyoulisten.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36596203.post-63478642842096346572013-02-26T18:21:19.051-08:002013-02-26T18:21:19.051-08:00I don't think of myself as a Bowie fan, but th... I don't think of myself as a Bowie fan, but then I can't imagine what Bowie fans would be like.

Okay. On Being A David Bowie Fan.NickShttp://www.beforeyoulisten.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36596203.post-3870292470283729492013-02-25T20:31:32.693-08:002013-02-25T20:31:32.693-08:00I must have been thinking about this because of th...I must have been thinking about this because of the buzz around the new Bowie album. Funny that there's still buzz. I don't think of him as a great musician, but as a conceptual artist, he's one of the giants. I don't think of myself as a Bowie fan, but then I can't imagine what Bowie fans would be like. He's such a chameleon, an almost Dadaist artist. Endlessly fascinating to me.

Now that I've gone down this particular rabbit hole, I may be stuck for a while in this oddball cluster of albums.

Could be worse.... All your posts are good; this is especially good. You're an extra fine writer Ms. Hughes, don't let nobody tell you different. Dylan's Nashville Skyline. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions. The soundtrack to The Harder They Come. Frank Zappa's Hot Rats. Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story. Steve Miller's The Joker. J.J. Cale's Naturally. Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water (probably because the store didn't have Bookends, the one I really wanted). And -- one of the most random purchases of the day -- David Bowie's Young Americans.

You did well. Not all of those hold up as classics, but many of them do.

You probably know that Bowie has a new album coming out soon, but I don't know if you noticed that Jimmy Cliff released an album last year (I only heard about from Amazon's recommendation -- I too find them useful). It's not perfect, but surprisingly good, and full of energy. As you can tell from the lead single (my second favorite track, but that performance is good).

It was funny reading this post because I like David Bowie and have listened to "Young Americans" a number of times (on a greatest hits collection, not the album), and I realize I've never actually paid attention to the lyrics. As soon I saw the title in your post I could hear the sound, but almost none of the quoted lyrics meant anything to me. I like David Bowie's lyrics but, apparently, that isn't true of "Young Americans."NickShttp://www.beforeyoulisten.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36596203.post-49910983176841273702013-02-23T11:38:33.274-08:002013-02-23T11:38:33.274-08:00Quite possibly my favorite post of yours.
